Abstract

Reading is one of important skill in English which has to be improved as one of requirement to master English language and gives benefits such as enriching the vocabulary, becoming more creative, and gaining more idea for writing. Unfortunately, the fact of reading interest in Indonesia is in poor condition. Which is more than 50% students aged among 15 years old in Indonesia have low motivation in reading. This research aimed at (1) discovering the need analysis of the students (2) presenting the designed pop-up book for seventh graders of SMP N 2 Godean. Since this research develop a media, it is categorized as Research and Development (R&D) which used Dick and Carey’s ADDIE model: Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. This research involved 32 students of 7th graders of SMP N 2 Godean and the data gained from observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation as research instruments. The result of this study, showed that the students were have low motivation in reading; whereas, they want to be master more in English, motivate their reading by using interesting media in reading, and have good score in English. Therefore, they need supplementary reading material which is appropriate to their learning styles, attractive media, and activity which integrated to other skill. By considering those lack, want, and necessities, the developed media that is fulfill their need is pop-up book. The layout was colorful and there were 3-dimension pictures which can help students understand the text. It also contained 4 activities such as; 1) vocabulary building to introduce new vocabularies through hide and seek game; 2) reading activity entitled I’m Proud of Indonesia taken from students’ textbook; 3) reading task which consist of task related to the text; 4) integrated skills activity with speaking or writing.
