Abstract

Bilingual is when a person uses more than one language in an utterance. The use of bilingual can make code switching and code mixing appear. Code switching is the changes of one language into another language in an event. Then code mixing is when someone uses both languages together. The phenomenon of bilingualism happened in English teacher when he conducted teaching and learning process in SMA N 1 Seyegan.
The research conducted to give wider knowledge about sociolinguistics in school areas. The objectives of the research are to identify the types of code switching and code mixing and the reason of code switching and code mixing performed by an English teacher in SMA N 1 Seyegan.
The method of the research was qualitative research through descriptive analysis. The subject of the research was the English teacher in SMA N 1 Seyegan. The research conducted in class XI MIIA 1 academic year 2016/2017. The instrument of the research was the utterances of English teacher. The findings of the research show that English teacher switching and mixing the language during teaching and learning process. In line with it, the teacher has a reason related to switching and mixing the language in order to emphasize the topic and repeat the material by switching and mixing the languages.
