Abstract

Language style, a branch of the sociolinguistic is a study to determine how the
conversation or a speech performed in order to achieve it‟s purpose of conveying the message
to the listener. This research is aimed to determine the kinds of language style that is used by
the kings in the movie “The King‟s Speech”. In conducting this research, the researcher will
use the descriptive qualitative research. A qualitative analysis of the language style will
discuss the types of language style and It‟s impact on the audience and also the function of
the speech performed in the movie.
The researcher found 6 speeches event that appeared in the movie. In these 6
speeches all 5 types of language style appeared in different composition. The most is frozen
style with 10 or about one third of the speeches. The rest are formal style with 7 appearances
or about 25,9%, consultative style with 2 appearances or 7,5%, 5 casual style or 18,5% and 3
intimate style or 11,1 It can be also concluded that there are 5 effects of language style that
appeared in the movie. They are “To Persuade The Reader”, “To Increase the Audience‟s
Taste”, “To Add the Artistic Effect of the Idea Being Offered by the Writer”, “To Create a
Certain Mood”, “To Make the Writer‟s Idea Clearer”. There are 6 function of speech that
appeared. Each of those are phatic, poetic, metalinguistic, referential, directive and
expressive.
