THE INFLUENCE OF JOSEPHINE’S EMOTION TOWARD HER RELATIONSHIP WITH FAMILY MEMBERS IN LOUISA MAY ALCOTT’S LITTLE WOMAN

Every single action cannot be separated by particular emotion. As human being, experience would be able to influence human’s emotions. Emotion significantly affects the actions or behavior from one to another individual. In fact, it is one of the main factors that affect the individual’s emotions toward family relationship as a place of their daily interaction. This research deals with a novel entitled Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott. The focus of this research is the influence of emotion by the main character, Josephine. The purpose of this research is (1) to find out Josephine’s emotion in the novel, (2) to analyze the effects of Josephine’s emotion with her family members in the novel. This research employed the library study and descriptive qualitative analysis method. The primary data was the novel itself. The secondary data was taken from other relevant sources, such as related books, articles, journals, and the internet. The approach of this research used a psychological approach. There are two findings in this research. The first finding reveals Josephine’s emotion which is divided into two aspects. They are positive and negative emotions. The first aspect is positive emotion includes love and enjoyment, while, the second aspect is negative emotion includes anger, sadness, and fear. Furthermore, the second finding reveals how Josephine’s emotion influences the relationship positively and negatively with her family members. It shows that having a good relationship is influenced by love and enjoyment. The way of Josephine in showing her positive emotions sometimes makes people around her feel uncomfortable with her attitude. On the other hand, the negative effect is caused by anger that makes someone feel regret. Her negative emotions affect negative impact to people around her. It influences Jo and her family have different argument.

Setiap tindakan tidak dapat dipisahkan oleh emosi tertentu. Sebagai manusia, pengalaman akan mampu mempengaruhi emosi manusia. Emosi secara signifikan mempengaruhi tindakan atau perilaku dari satu ke orang lain. Sebenarnya, ini adalah salah satu faktor utama yang mempengaruhi emosi individu terhadap hubungan keluarga sebagai tempat interaksi mereka sehari-hari. Penelitian ini membahas sebuah novel berjudul Little Women yang ditulis oleh Louisa May Alcott. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah pengaruh emosi oleh karakter utama, Josephine. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui emosi Josephine dalam novel tersebut, (2) menganalisis efek emosi Josephine dengan anggota keluarganya dalam novel tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi pustaka dan deskriptif kualitatif. Data utamanya adalah novel itu sendiri. Data sekunder diambil dari sumber lain yang relevan, seperti buku terkait, artikel, jurnal, dan internet. Pendekatan penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan psikologis. Ada dua temuan dalam penelitian ini. Temuan pertama mengungkapkan emosi Josephine yang terbagi dalam dua aspek. Mereka adalah emosi positif dan negatif. Aspek pertama adalah emosi positif meliputi cinta dan kenikmatan, sementara aspek kedua adalah emosi negatif termasuk kemarahan, kesedihan, dan ketakutan. Selanjutnya, temuan kedua mengungkapkan bagaimana emosi Josephine mempengaruhi hubungan secara positif dan negatif dengan anggota keluarganya. Ini menunjukkan bahwa memiliki hubungan yang baik dipengaruhi oleh cinta dan kenikmatan. Cara Josephine dalam menunjukkan emosi positifnya terkadang membuat orang di sekitarnya merasa tidak nyaman dengan sikapnya. Di sisi lain, efek negatifnya disebabkan oleh kemarahan yang membuat seseorang merasa menyesal. Emosi negatifnya mempengaruhi dampak negatif pada orang di sekitarnya. Hal itu mempengaruhi Jo dan keluarganya memiliki argumen yang berbeda.
