Abstract

This research analyzed illocutionary acts which were misunderstood by Caitlin as asperger syndrome in Mockingbird novel. That novel showed some utterances of illocutionary acts from another character which misinterpreting by her. Considering there are problems in English language learning focusing on illocutionary acts, so this study was conducted used pragmatics analysis. The purposes of this study were to classify illocutionary act based on Searle’s theory and analyze their function by using Leech’s theory.

This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data which were used in this research were the utterances that were misunderstood by Caitlin the main character in the novel. The data analysis used pragmatics approach with theory by Searle and Leech. From Searle’s theory, there are 5 classifications of illocutionary act, representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. There are 4 functions of illocutionary act which is discussed by Leech, collaborative, convivial, competitive, and conflictive.

Based on the analysis, the researcher found that from the 5 classifications only 4 of them which were misunderstood by the main character, representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. Directive was expressed 26 times, representative was expressed 13 times, commissive appeared 2 times and expressive appeared one time. All functions of illocutionary act were misunderstood by the main character in the novel. Competitive was expressed 20 times, collaborative was expressed 13 times, convivial appeared 5 times, and conflictive appeared 4 times.
