This research aimed to evaluate the textbooks When English Rings a Bell which is the principal guide for teachers to teach in junior high school. This book is provided by the government for teaching and learning purposes, referring to the curriculum 2013. Textbook that will be evaluated is the textbook for 8 grade of junior high school. This textbook is used by all junior high school in DIY as a textbook from the government to help implement curriculum 2013. With the development of this textbook based on curriculum 2013, this book should meet the criteria in the curriculum 2013.With these facts then the evaluation of this textbook needs to be done.
The design of this study is an evaluation research. This research is carried out by taking data from junior high school teachers in Yogyakarta area. Samples taken from 15 schools in DIY. 2 English teachers who teach in 8 grade was taken from each school. Next the survey will be carried out in the form of questionnaires and also researchers will do crosscheck with the textbook to adjust to the survey results. The result will be displayed in table form to make it easy when reading the data. By reading this research is expected teachers more selective in choosing teaching materials to fit the needs of teaching and learning. For the government as a material evaluation of the textbook that will be published later.
This textbook according to the survey result, in some aspects is very effective and ineffective in some other aspects from the survey result there are some strength of the textbook based on the teacher’s view. They are: 1)The approach that use in this textbook. 2)The textbook is well designed by its appearances. 3)The topic presented in this textbook. 4)The methodology that use in this textbook. The textbook also have some weaknesses. They are: 1)The content of the textbook. The textbook doesn’t provide character developer. 2)The textbook doesn’t properly teach about listening, reading, writing, and speaking skill.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan evaluasi terhadap buku ajar When English Rings a Bell yang merupakan buku pokok bagi guru untuk mengajar di tingkat SMP. Buku ini merupakan buku yang disediakan oleh pemerintah untuk keperluan belajar mengajar, mengacu terhadap kurikulum 2013. Buku ajar yang akan dievaluasiadalah buku ajar untuk kelas 8 SMP. Buku ajar ini digunakan oleh seluruh SMP di DIY karena merupakan buku wajib dari pemerintah untuk membantu menerapkan kurikulum 2013. Dengan dikembangkannya buku ajar ini berdasarkan kurikulum 2013, seharusnya buku ini memenuhi kriteria yang ada di kurikulum 2013. Dengan fakta tersebut maka evaluasi terhadap buku ajar ini perlu dilakukan.
Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian evaluasi . penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan mengambil data dari guru SMP didaerah DIY, sample yang diambil di pilih dari 15 sekolah di DIY. Setiap sekolah diambil 2 guru bahasa inggris yang mengajar dikelas 8. Selanjutnya survey akan dilaksanakan dalam bentuk kuesioner dan juga penelitian akan melakukan crosschek dengan buku ajar untuk menyesuaikan dengan hasil survey. Selanjutnya hasil akan ditampilkan dalam bentuk table untuk memudahkan pembacaan data. Dengan membaca penelitian ini diharapkan guru semakin selektif dalam memilih materi ajar agar sesuai dengan kebutuhan belajar mengajar . bagi pemerintah sebagai bahan evaluasi terhadap buku ajar yang akan diterbitkan kemudian.
Berdasarkan hasil survey, di beberapa aspek buku ajar ini sangat efektif dan juga tidak efektif di beberapa aspek lainnya. Berdasalkan hasil survey ada beberapa kelebihan dari buku ajar ini berdasarkan para guru. 1)Pendekatan yang di gunakan buku ajar ini.2)Desain buku yang menarik dari penampilannya. 3)Topik yang di tampilkan di buku ajar ini. 4)Metode yang di gunakan. Buku ajar ini juga mempunyai beberapa kekurangan.1)Konten dari buku ajar ini.Buku ini tidak menyertakan pengembangan karakter. 2)Buku ajar ini tidak mengajarkan skill listening, reading, writing, dan speaking dengan tepat
