A COMPARISON ON PARENTING STYLES BETWEEN CORALINE’S TWO MOTHERS IN NEIL GAIMAN’S “CORALINE”

Parenting style is one of the usual events happening in daily life. It reflects on how parents treat their children in order to help them grow. Parents’ distinctive way of nurturing children have effects on the children’s mental and behavior. This research analyzed the differences of parenting styles between Coraline’s real mother and the other mother in Neil Gaiman’s “Coraline”. It was because Coraline met two different treatment from her real mother and the other mother. Then, this research wanted to find out the types of parenting style which were used by the two mothers. The descriptive-qualitative method was used and merely focused on the analysis of textual data. There were two kinds of data in this research which were primary data and secondary data. The source of the main data was taken from the novel entitled Coraline written by Neil Gaiman. The primary data were in the form of description of utterances, dialogues used among the characters, words, phrases, and also sentences. The secondary data were taken from the other sources in the form of books, articles, dictionaries, and sites which are related to the study. The data were collected through some steps, they are reading, identifying, inventorying, classifying, selecting, and reporting. Data analysis was based on Creswell (1998) data analysis spiral. Data analysis was done through organization, data understanding, identifying and classifying, then integrating and summarizing. The result of data analyzing shown in a descriptive way. Coraline’s real mother was portrayed as ambitious and less attentive but she was also responsible, caring, and supportive. Meanwhile, the beldam was pictured as an frightful, untruthful, controlling, and manipulative character. Coraline’s real mother had authoritative and neglectful parenting styles. The other mother presented authoritarian parenting style. Coraline’s personality when she was raised by her real mother were independent and socially accepted however she often felt to have lower self-esteem. But when she was with the beldam, Coraline become aggressive and a liar. Keywords
