SEMANTICS ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ON ADELE’S SONGS TOWARDS THE LISTENERS’ EMOTION

A song usually uses figurative language in order to make beautiful lyrics. Hence, some people might have misunderstandings toward the intended meaning when they do not know the meaning of the lyrics. Therefore, this research analyzed the figurative language used on Adele’s song. The aims of this research were to identify the types of figurative languages found on Adele’s song lyrics and to find out the listener’s emotion toward figurative languages used on Adele’s song. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The research instruments used in this research were the researcher herself and interview. The data in this research was the song lyrics of “Make you feel my love”, “All I ask”, “When we were young”, and “Water under the bridge”. To collect the data, the lyrics were written down while listened to the song frequently. Griffith and Perrine’s theories were used to analyze the data and did an interview about listeners’ emotion related to the analysis of the use of figurative language on the song used Juslin’s theory. The result, there were eighteen figurative languages applied in the songs and the listener’s emotion evoked by the lyrics mostly belong to subjective feeling according to Juslin’s theory
