Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of social support and hardiness personality towards parenting stress among mothers of down-syndrome children in Yogyakarta. The research hypotheses are I ) There is a negative correlation between social support and parenting stress among mothers of down-syndrome children; 2) There is a negative corelation between hardiness personality and parenting stress among mothers of down-syndrome children; and 3) There is a correlation between social supporl and hardiness personality towards parenting stress among mothers of down-syndrome children. To collect the data, this research used the adaptation of the Parenting Stress Index Shorl Form (PSI-SF) scale, the modification of the International Support Evaluation List (ISEL) scale, and the adaptation of the hardiness personality scale developed by Bernardo. The research subjects werc 42 mothers of down-syndrome children living in Yogyakarta. To analyze the data, it was used product-moment correlation and multiple regression technique. The results of the study prove that there is a negative correlation between social support and parenting stress among mothers of down-syndrome children with a correlation coefficient of -0.641 and p - 0.000 (p<0.05). There is a negative corelation between hardiness personality and parenting stress among mothers of down- syndrorne children rvith a correlation coefficient of -0.561 and p : 0,000 (p<0.05). There is a correlation between social support and hardiness personality towards parenting stress among mothers of dor,r,n-syndrome children with a correlation coeflficient of 18.505 and p : 0.000. The coefficient of detenniuation (R2) is 0.487 or 48.7%o. meaning the contribution of social supporl and hardiness persorrality towards parenting stress. ivhile 51.3% is inf'luenced by other factors.
