Abstract

Speaking fluently by using English is considered to be the most difficult skill
for senior high school students including students of the second grade IPS 2 (XI IPS
2) SMA Negeri 1 Seyegan. Based on the preliminary research which had been done,
it was found that the students were less confident and less fluent to produce the
words in class. In accordance with the condition, this research is aimed at (1) to
describe the improvement of students’ speaking fluency by using debate technique;
(2) to find out the improvement of students’ speaking fluency after implementation
of debate technique; (3) to recognize the students’ interest in using debate technique
to enhance their speaking fluency.
The design for this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) and
conducted by involving twenty nine students. This research aimed at helping the
students of XI IPS 2 to cover their speaking fluency problems by using debate
technique. In this resesearch, there were an observation in pre-cycle and cycles of
classroom action research. Conducting this research spent a month with five
meeting from 5th of August to 2nd of September 2015. The instruments used were
observations by using field notes, tests, and questionnaires.
The collected data were analyzed and shew the result of the pretest and postest
avarage score were 5,35 and 7,82. There were found that the score improved from
5,35 to 7,82. It can be concluded that students got improvements on their speaking
fluency and also their speaking confidence.
Based on the results, it can be concluded that teaching speaking fluency by
using debate is an appropriate technique to improve students self-confidence in
speaking in front of the class and also improve their critical thinking to solve the
issue arisen.
