Abstract

Abstract
English is the international language that many countries use it as their daily communication. There were some reasons that students in Indonesia should master English. The specific reason was about 2013 Curriculum emphasizing the students to have more time in reading caused of following Literasi program by Minister of Education and Culture. This research aimed 1) to find the data of needs analysis of English reading skill development for the seventh grade; 2) to design the supplementary reading for the seventh grade; 3) to describe the appropriateness of the designed supplementary English reading text towards the seventh grade of SMP N 1 Seyegan.
In this study, the researcher used Research and Development (R&D) to design the product. The researcher was conducted the study on VIIE students of SMP N 1 Seyegan. The used instruments were questionnaire, observation, interview, test, and field-notes. Those instruments were used to find the students’ need. Then, the procedure in designing the product had some steps which was known as ADDIE model. It came from the abbreviation of some phases; Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate.
The result of this study, based on the obtained data, showed that students needed various exercises on reading skills which covered in the supplementary reading materials focused on descriptive text. The designed materials was created using some guidelines, such as 2013 Curriculum, students’ need, students’ characteristics, and level of students. Finally, the designed materials was considered as good materials proved by the evaluation of Focus Group Discussion (FGD).
