AN ANALYSIS ON POLITENESS STRATEGY IN DETACHMENT MOVIE

In every place, when using a language, politeness is required. It is
important to learn in order to make a successful communication and
create a polite conversation. However, the current condition makes
people do not apply politeness to communicate with others. They can
easily utter bad words that insult others. It does not only happen in real
life, but also in a movie. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and
describe the politeness strategies that found in Detachment as one of the
movies that showed how people communicate using politeness strategies.
Besides, this study also examined the reason why the main characters
used politeness strategies in the movie. A qualitative research and
descriptive methods were applied in this study since all data are in the
form of words. To analyse the data, the theory of Brown and Levinson
about politeness strategies and speech acts theory from Searle were used.
Based on the analysis, it is found that there were 20 utterances that used
four politeness strategies, they were bald on record, positive politeness,
negative politeness, and off record. Moreover, from 5 types of speech
acts, only 3 types of them that found in this movie, namely assertive,
directive and expressive.
