SOCIOLINGUISTICS ANALYSIS OF TABOO WORDS IN BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) MOVIE (2019)

Nowadays, taboo words are not considered as a rude or insuperable expression for certain society. However, some people are completely against taboo while some others find it important to use them as a way to communicate with other people. Therefore, this study aimed to find the types and function occurs in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) to see many points of view of taboo words and the use of it in communication. This study is under the interest of sociolinguistics, which is a branch of linguistics studying language and its functions in society. This study employed qualitative research method and the utterances of main characters as the data source. This study found 51 taboo words delivered by main characters in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie. This study brings out the type of taboo words uttered by the characters of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie can be classified into four; Epithet, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity. The functions of the words were classified into three; to draw attention, to show contempt, and to be provocative.
