Abstract
Learning English in the school is a must; with the existence of English lessons
at school, then students will recognize and know English early. Thus, they will have a
basic knowledge better before continuing to higher education level. But the students at
the eighth graders students of SMP N 1 Sedayu had the problem in learning reading, they
got low score in the reading tests. This research aims (1) to describe how Collaborative
Strategic Reading can improve students' reading comprehension, and (2) to find out the
significant improvement of students' reading comprehension using Collaborative
Strategic Reading.
The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which
is to identify and solve the problem on students reading comprehension. This research is
carried out in the VIII E class at SMP N 1 Sedayu and involves 32 students. To analyze
the data, it uses tests; pre test and post test score.
The research findings showed that the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading
(CSR) could improve students' reading comprehension. The improvement included: (1)
students were able to identify the form of text; (2) students were able find the meaning of
difficult word in the text (vocabulary); (3) students were able to get the detail
information in the text; (4) students were able to identify the main idea in the text.
Besides, the improvement of students' reading comprehension could be seen from the
improvement of the mean score of pre test, that was 50, post test first cycle which was
67, and post test second cycle was 81. Thus, the researcher suggested that CSR could be
used as a technique to help students in learning especially in getting their reading
comprehension.
