SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN THE NOVEL A WOMAN IS NO MAN BY ETAF RUM

Semantics is the study of meaning. Figurative language and semantics
have a great relationship because without understanding the literal meaning of
spoken or written sentences, it will be more challenging to understand the
meanings of figurative language. Figurative language is a language that does not
have its true meaning. In novels, writers often use figurative language that is
difficult for readers to understand. There is an aspect of meaning in semantic
studies to analyze more deeply.
This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Qualitative analysis will
discuss the types of figurative languages that occurred in the conversation
involving Isra as the main character in the novel a woman is no man by Etaf Rum.
Furthermore, to analyze the meaning aspect that focuses on the intention.
The researcher found 28 data that appeared in the novel. All kinds of
comparison figurative language and aspects of meaning focus on intention were
found. The type of comparison of figurative language that appears the most is
Simile 12 or 42,8%, Allegory 6 or 21,4%, Personification and metaphor have the
same portion, each of which is 5 or 17,9%. The aspect of meaning with the most
appeared narrative 10 or 35,7%. The other aspect of meaning is declarative 8 or
28,5%, pedagogical 4 or 14,3%, political 3 or 10,7%, persuasive 2 or 7,2%, and
the least appearing is imperative only 1 or 3,6%.
