Abstract

There is an issue regarding competency level in mastering English in rural
area. The characteristic of the rural communities has a narrow mindset in absorbing
newness as reason rural area left behind regarding the competency. In rural, the
community tends to have a low desire regarding education (Susilawati, 2012). This
article aims to reveal the level of children’s English interest in the rural area
especially in the Bantul Regency of Yogyakarta Province. Interest is valued as
important component of academic achievement. Following how significant English
skills can change people's future, the level of student's interest in English is important
to be revealed. The ability to master English relates to the interest in learning English
because people with interest are considered easier to receive the knowledge. Thus,
this study is expected to find the student level of learning English in a rural area, that
so any interested person and stakeholder can take an action to make significant
changes in developing English competency in the rural area.
