Abstract

This research aims to review the conversation practice and its importance in the
communicative approach to improve speaking skills. It brings some clarification on (1) the
interaction between student and teacher, student and student in the classroom through
conversation, (2) the application of conversation in general as a challenge for teachers, and
(3) furthermore, the relevance of conversation activities since several other activities
promote speaking skills in the classroom. To achieve the objective proposed, a literature
review was carried out. It shows that the interaction in the classroom through conversation
is essential to develop students’ communicative competence, and even though teachers are
an important source of knowledge, they have to give more space to students interacting with
each other. It also reveals that talk as interaction is everyday conversation, the natural
conversation that seeks to establish social relationships. This kind of conversation is more
challenging to control, as it does not apply to specific rules. A natural conversation is
subject to interruptions, interjections, sudden change of direction, choice of the topic at
random by the participants, and demands time. Despite being a great challenge, the
conversation is very relevant for constructing communicative competence since the ability
to participate in a conversation in the target language makes part of the student’s
communicative competence. This work is critical to clarify that conversation is a powerful
tool for developing communicative ability and improving speaking skills. It also brings the
awareness that conversation is a field without rules that have a lot to be explored.
