Abstract

English is one of the international languages that must be mastered by students
nowadays. Reading writing skills in learning. English is important to master. It
plays a significant role for students to achieve learning goals. The ways in
reading writing skills will be hard or the students if the teacher is only used the
conventional method in the learning process. Therefore, this research offered an
alternative way to teach a reading-writing skills for 8th graders. This study aimed
at producing media that contain an application as interactivemultimedia.
This type of research is R&D (Research and Development) using Hannafin
and Peck model. This media consists of a combination of text, pictures, audio,
and animation, In the process of collecting data, several instruments such as
interviews, observation, documentation, questionnaires, and tests were employed.
The obtained data were analyzed both descriptively and statistically. This research
product consisted of a smartphone application with 3 exercise parts and contains 5
questions for each section also 1 exercise for writing tasks about short personal
recount text. Fourty two students of the 8th Graders of a State Junior High School
in Batang were involved as the participants. The study revealed that the designed
product was appropriate to use as an alternative media based on the needs analysis
results; Results on mean difference between pre- post-test reading-writing skills
showed 85,7> 66,7 which was considered significantly higher; Expert judgment
results also revealed a score of 3,8 from the Content expert and 4,7 from the IT
expert; and forum group discussion result showed valid. It can be concluded that
application is appropriate to use and alternative media to increase the readingwriting skills of the learners
